ABSTRACT

One of the features of working life today is that whatever education and training is received early in life, it will almost certainly become only partially relevant, perhaps even obsolete during one's working lifetime. Change in economic and social conditions is a constant within contemporary society as technological advances and globalization affect whole industries as well as the skills component of almost every job. The need to learn and to acquire new knowledge, new skills, new approaches and attitudes has become an everyday aspect of each individual's career. In some cases this may merely be an updating and reskilling process, but in others it will require a complete change from one occupation to another. The rapid alterations to everyday working lives brought about by digital technology, the Internet, email and social media are unlikely to grind to a halt.
