ABSTRACT

In the preceding chapter it was seen that much of the training effort within the hospitality industry focuses on developing the competencies needed to perform particular tasks and roles. It is concerned, in the main, with the present training needs and the immediate future, with meeting customers’ immediate needs, as well as emphasizing key elements of longer-term business policy and HRM strategy. However, organizations also need managers who are able to interpret external environmental influences, plan ahead, organize and deploy resources, develop and interpret business information, and motivate a committed workforce. Management and leadership within the contemporary organization is a significant challenge in any sector. To ensure that such people are available in the right place and at the right time, organizations need to adopt some form of management development programme.
