ABSTRACT

In the previous chapter I examined theories of motivation and engagement. In this chapter I will move on to look specifically at the ways in which game structures create a designed experience that supports and enhances enjoyment and engagement. One of the main difficulties with game design is ensuring that the levels of challenge are appropriate for players so that the game is fun to play. A game that is too easy or where the player does not have any control, such as games of chance like Snakes and Ladders, are boring to older players who will soon lose interest; games that are too hard or complex or where players keep ‘getting stuck’ quickly become frustrating because the level of challenge is greater than the ability of the player. Taking into account that different players have different skill levels, persistence and preferences, and that challenges become easier as skill levels increase, getting the right level of challenge for different players at different times is a difficult balancing act.
