ABSTRACT

I read Aristotle’s major works on metaphysics, rhetoric, ethics and political society as an extensive yet incomplete inventory of propositions about the human condition. Taken as a whole, these propositions function as presuppositions for the more specific condition we call modernity. Whether we accept, contest or reformulate these propositions, we tend to do so serially or episodically. Yet for Aristotle they all fit together as a working whole.
