ABSTRACT

Writing and reporting work together in delivering the most complete news stories that best serve news audiences. Solid and complete reporting makes the writing of a story easier because the journalist can choose the most interesting information, the most clearly articulated quote or soundbite, and the most illuminating detail and description (via visuals or text) for the news report. Excellent reporting provides the journalist more options to entice and maintain the audience for the news story. If a story is hard to write, it often means the journalist does not have all the elements collected in the reporting. An answer to a question, a crucial detail or a clarifying fact may be missing. As such, the journalist cannot connect the key points of the news story.
