ABSTRACT

New technologies give journalists the opportunity to provide bits and pieces of news as it happens, often in faster and shorter ways. This gives the audience a chance to experience the news often at the same time as those reporting it. But journalists also have the responsibility as well as the ability to pull those bits and pieces together into a cohesive narrative for news audiences. Over the years, newspapers developed techniques and formats that best demonstrated the way to put together that narrative in print: the news article. Then, when radio came along, journalists working in that medium came up with useful ways of telling the news of the day to fit that format, known as the radio package. Journalists in television and now online have done the same. Even though we live in a 24-hour/seven- day-a-week world, journalism still operates with the sense that it should chronicle the key news events of the day. Many news consumers still value that daily chronicle.
