ABSTRACT

David Potts in World Gold Markets 1981/1982 estimated that in 1980 Latin America produced almost 30 per cent of the world production outside South Africa and the Communist sector. The area contains the legendary Montecristo mine and, more recently, Rosaria’s huge open pit Pueblo Viejo mine in the Dominican Republic, but the production source which had the most publicity in 1980-1 was the alluvial mining operations in Brazil.
