ABSTRACT
Stevenson (1831-1908) at the Orient Line; Richard Norman Shaw (1831-1912) for
the White Star Line; and T.E. Collcutt (1840-1924) for P&O – and all three managed
to decorate modernity using the vocabulary of a romanticized English past with hints
of the exotic ‘Orient’ (Said 2003).
