ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the themes of this book by considering how television documentaries, particularly on the law, are being used as a vehicle of citizenship education in China, and how they are often made more effective by using audience participation. If we accept the idea that ‘education for citizenship is not an optional extra, but an integral part of the concept’ of citizenship (Heater 1990: 319) then citizenship pedagogy via the electronic media is of paramount importance to our understanding of citizenship in China today.
