ABSTRACT

Development has been often closely associated with the mode of insertion of national economies into the global division of labour (Gereffi 1994: 214). As Evans (2003: 213) succinctly put it, ‘trying to get into more desirable niches is an important part of the struggle to develop’ where ‘the countries that fill the most rewarding and dynamic sectoral niches are “developed”. Insofar as the international division of labor is a hierarchy, worrying about development means worrying about your place in the hierarchy.’
