ABSTRACT
As already pointed out in Chapter 5, the dynamics of the political regime is of great importance in explaining the divergence between Turkey and Egypt following their adoption of economic liberalization. The intensity of political competition to which incumbents were exposed to keep office was a decisive factor behind incentives to undertake state reform.
