ABSTRACT

What precedes . . . de shíhou has various structures. It is either a verb-object phrase, as 25a-b, or more commonly a short clause, as 25c-d. The structure [VP/clause + de shíhou] is normally followed by a comma, which means that the time specified should occur in the first of the two clauses. The subject of the complex sentence is usually at the beginning of the second clause, as in 25a-c. If there are two subjects, e.g. mAma ‘mom’ and háizi ‘the child’ in 25d, each initiates its respective clause.
