ABSTRACT

This section contains treatments of topics in Plato's philosophy which are not limited to or primarily concerned with a single dialogue. Cross references are provided to discussions of these topics which are grouped under individual works. The nature of Plato's style and thought resists categorization even of the general type I have attempted here. It was obvious that a certain amount of organization was necessary, but equally obvious that attempts to subdivide finely would misrepresent the nature of Plato's thought and of Platonic scholarship, and would thus be counterproductive. The compromize which I have reached is to leave the number of categories quite small and to provide indices which list the numbers of entries relevant to certain topics within the larger categories. In this way it is possible to refer conveniently to works on these topics which are located under individual works of Plato. In the categories where these special indices are provided (sections V A (Dialectic), V C (Psychology), V F (Ethics), V G (Politics and Society), and V I (Aesthetics)), the entries included in the list of cross references for the section as a whole are concerned with other areas of those categories than the ones covered by the special indices.
