ABSTRACT
Muirhead would have been due to retire in 1920, but in view of the unsettlement of after-war conditions he was asked to continue for one more year. His retirement, when it came, did not mean any severance of interest in the work of the University, and for some time a room was placed at his disposal there. He continued in particular to play an active part in the work of the extra-mural department. He was always persona gratissima at reunions, lectures and summer schools of the rapidly growing West Midland Workers’ Educational Association. For some years in the early twenties their summer schools were held at Repton School through the kindness of the Headmaster, Dr. Fisher (now Bishop of London), and Muirhead, though nearing his seventieth year, would put his less vigorous juniors to shame by his fidelity to the early morning swim.
