ABSTRACT

Biogas is similar in some ways to biomass in that it involves a process that converts organic matter into heat which can then be used to generate electricity. It is similarly of relevance to land managers in that it depends in part on material derived from the land, in this case in the form of animal waste, and additionally in some cases purpose-grown crops. It does furthermore produce a residue, or digestate, which needs to be disposed of and, as its composition makes it a useful agricultural fertiliser, this is best spread onto farmland rather than put into landfill.
