ABSTRACT

On drawing us far, we have introduced some basic principles of visual order. In this chapter, we elaborate on our introduction to figure-ground, and articulate the pivotal role it plays in design thinking and drawing. e contrast between a figure and its ground or  provides design with a setting for building. It governs how we visualize potential organization and construction. It becomes a kind of drawing where design anticipates action. e most common architectural drawing is the plan. Its name reflects its purpose – designers plan before committing to action.
