ABSTRACT

On July 26, 2006, at approximately 10:00 p.m., Gabriel Marrufo was shot and killed in the banquet room of the Sunrise Hotel in Nashville, Tennessee. His brother, Juan Antonio Marrufo, and his sister, Claudia Marrufo, were both shot and wounded. When Detective Winter of the Nashville Police Department arrived at the scene, he found all three victims lying in a back hallway of the banquet room. The family had gathered at the hotel for the baptism of a cousin of the victims. During the festivities, five to seven Hispanic men, including Giovanni Marin, tried to enter the banquet room in order to join the party. Mr. Marrufo told them they were not welcome and asked them to leave. Shouting ensued, and Mr. Marrufo punched one of the interlopers in the face. Mr. Marin and his friends went to their car and then returned to the banquet room, two of them armed with guns. As they attempted to re-enter the party, someone shot Gabriel Marrufo twice and then fired several more times, striking Juan Antonio Marrufo and his sister, Claudia. They were both coming to the aid of their wounded brother. By the time the police arrived, the culprits had fled, and the Marrufo siblings were rushed to the hospital. Gabriel died shortly afterward, and Juan Antonio and Claudia were in critical condition.
