ABSTRACT

This book explores what has been attempted in the effort to reduce urban poverty in the Global South over the past 30–40 years, what have been the experiences of the projects and programmes that have been introduced, what new innovations have emerged from such experiences and what current practices suggest for our understanding of effective interventions. In writing this book we are drawing together our work on this topic over the past 20 years – the ideas to which we have been exposed, the literature we have reviewed and contributed to, the groups we have visited and the experiences and histories that have been shared with us. We have written this book both to share what we have learnt – and to catalyse a wider debate.
