ABSTRACT

It is only through the effi cient and effective management of innovation that the creative ideas which are generated and harnessed from internal and external sources may be implemented when found to be feasible and valuable. Management play a key role in the successful application of the innovation process. This chapter discusses the manner in which innovation may be applied in organisations with different structures. It explores the advantages and disadvantages of open source applications, comparing them to proprietary solutions such as patents, copyright and intellectual property (IP). The chapter provides a number of models which organisations could utilise to increase their potential for applied innovation. It concludes with a discussion on how the transfer of knowledge and technology is achieved, drawing out the implications related to innovation that arise from this process.
