By the end of this chapter, we hope that you will:
understand why and how Friedrich Schleiermacher’s thought has been important for modern theology and modern thought about religion, including how it has affected contemporary thought
understand some key concepts for Schleiermacher’s theology, and how he uses them
have a basic understanding of the central ideas and themes of the Romantic movement and how it influenced Schleiermacher’s theology
have thought through one approach to reading a ‘difficult’ primary text in theology and feel more confident about reading other primary texts.
