ABSTRACT

Training in the field of conflict resolution often includes simulations that seek to capture the critical elements of actual mediation session and to shore up the skills of would-be practitioners. In this section we offer a model for a simulation of a mode of practice called problem-solving workshops. In addition to the background information about a hypothetical conflict, the model presents assignments for three groups of players in the simulation: the panel of facilitators, the workshop participants, and observer to the workshop. This simulation is designed to replicate a preliminary stage of mediation, serving ideally as a prelude to subsequent negotiations with the central government of an African country.
