ABSTRACT

In this chapter we consider the first step in a series of multilevel models of public trust in the police. Why do some people believe that the police are competent to do what they are expected to do, while others do not? Why do some people feel that the police share the interests and motives of individuals and communities, while others do not? Does trust in police effectiveness and police fairness and shared interests ‘cluster’ in neighbourhoods, whereby people who share the same locality tend to have similar levels of trust?
