ABSTRACT
On 9 August 1945 the Second World War was effectively brought to an end when the USA dropped the second atomic bomb on Nagasaki, Japan. It was intended to force the Japanese to surrender. Five days later the Emperor of Japan surrendered. In the USA VJ or ‘Victory in Japan’ Day is commemorated on 2 September, the date that the surrender agreement was actually signed.
