ABSTRACT

Practicing in the medical setting renders it imperative that the behavioral care provider (BCP) has a working knowledge of psychopharmacology. This chapter is not intended to qualify the BCP for prescription privileges or to compete with the prescribing physician; rather, the psychotherapist needs to know what medications have been prescribed for the patient being treating, what their side effects might be, and whether they are appropriate for the condition for which you are providing psychotherapy. It will enable you to be alert to any untoward or inappropriate medications, the emergence of side effects, and to cooperate with the physician to provide the best care possible for your patient.
