ABSTRACT
What do probation workers actually do? In this chapter we examine in detail the daily routines of probation workers and the physical environments in which they work. We discuss the changing nature of the buildings in which probation offices are located and their greater focus on security. We analyse the benefits and frustrations of working predominantly at computers in open-plan offices or delivering classroom-based ‘programmes’ rather than making home visits and being a recognized part of a local community. We acknowledge the variety of different settings in which probation work is undertaken, including approved premises, prisons and unpaid work in the community.
