ABSTRACT

Delegates poured into the city’s Sandton Conference Centre in extraordinary number. The Johannesburg Summit was similar in size and complexity to the Rio 1992 Earth Summit, with more than 10,000 government delegates, 104 heads of state or government, 8,000 accredited NGOs and 4,000 media representatives. A multitude of exhibitions, meetings and side-events ran non-stop around Johannesburg and other South African cities drawing thousands of additional local participants, non-accredited NGOs and press. The UN estimated that over 40,000 people took part in the summit in one way or another.
