ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the changing nature of the employment landscape, the contributing factors, the labor market trends under way, and the strategies to address the adverse consequences of labor market transformations. It also examines the specific labor market features of contemporary globalization—changes in technology, organization of production and firm restructuring, and the neoliberal policies that have shaped labor markets. The chapter discusses the interrelated consequences of economic restructuring: employment and income insecurity; deterioration of working conditions; widening income inequality and social polarization; rising informality; persistent poverty and expansion of pockets of vulnerable workers among whom women are overrepresented. It focuses on the responses of multilateral institutions, labor unions, and grassroots organizations, particularly women's advocacy groups, to promote workers' rights, to increase women's voice, and to address the challenges brought about by the changes in the labor market.
