ABSTRACT

The term ‘inclusion’ implies that the needs of all students should be met within the mainstream school. This however presents quite a dilemma in relation to providing for all students and at the same time acknowledging the ‘diversity’ that is present in all school populations. The desire to obtain full inclusion can result in considerable challenges particularly if it is brought about too hastily. It is important to train all staff in understanding the diverse needs of their students. If it happens too quickly any training that has taken place will not have had sufficient time to make an impact on staff. This is particularly the situation in relation to dyslexia as there may be some misguided beliefs on what constitutes dyslexia and particularly the range of characteristics associated with dyslexia and the best type of intervention. For that reason it is preferable to see inclusion as a process that takes place over time.
