ABSTRACT

Bell founders (fushi 1 ) make bells. (The different parts of the bell are named.) The two spines at the edge-corners (luan 2 ) of the arched rim are called xian 3 , and the arched rim between the corners is called yu. 4 Above this comes the striking section called gu 5 , i.e. “drum.” Above gu the part of the bell with decorative cylindrical walls is called zheng. 6 Above this the crown zone, i.e. the “roof”, is called wu. 7 Above this the bell shank is called yong 8 . The top end of the handle is called heng. 9 On the handle, there is the hanging ring called xuan 10 with the ring knob (guan 11 ) attached. The decorative design at the zheng is called zhuan 12 embossed with studs (mei 13 ), i.e. studs (jing 14 ). Above the yu inside are the grooves (sui 15 ).
