ABSTRACT

‘Banking in the Republic of Ireland has changed more in the past ten years than in the previous fifty. The restructuring of older banks, the establishment of a large number of new banks, the emergence of financial markets and the developing role of the central bank are the main elements in the story.’ (Governor of the Central Bank of Ireland, Dr T. K. Whitaker at the Manchester Statistical Society 30 November 1971, speech reprinted in the Central Bank of Ireland Quarterly Bulletin, Spring 1972, p.62.)
