ABSTRACT

Archaeologists try to re-assemble past life from the broken remains it leaves behind. There is a wide range of methods used in archaeology for fi nding sites and artefacts, recording earthworks and buildings, remote sensing of unseen remains, fi eld collecting, excavation, post-excavation analysis of fi nds, environmental sampling, dating of materials, writing up reports, interpreting sites to the public, arranging museum displays and so forth. Archaeology is more than only excavation. Whole books are written about archaeological methods. All I have room for here is a short summary. More details can be found from books in the reading list at the end of this book.
