ABSTRACT
Chapter 7 briefly explained the legislative and fiscal framework within which the mortgage market operates. This chapter is concerned with the economic impact of tax and other benefits which owner-occupiers receive, and also compares the relative positions of owner-occupiers and tenants. The government subsidies to each sector are dealt with first, a comparative study follows and finally there is a discussion on the effect of ending tax relief on mortgage interest.
