ABSTRACT

Of the several psychodynamic approaches, the interpersonal dynamic psychotherapies are currently in vogue. Among these, Brief Dynamic Psychotherapy, also known as Time-Limited Dynamic Psychotherapy (Strupp & Binder, 1984; Binder, 2004; Levenson, 1995), is a commonly used and research-based approach and is the focus of this chapter. The goals of Brief Dynamic Psychotherapy treatment are to foster client insight and facilitate corrective emotional experiences (Levenson, 1995). This chapter begins with a description of the Brief Dynamic perspective and its basic premises. Next, it describes the factors involved in a Brief Dynamic assessment and provides some guidelines for summarizing this type of assessment. Then, it describes the process of developing and writing a Brief Dynamic case conceptualization. This process is then applied to the fi ve cases introduced in Chapter 1.
