ABSTRACT

We have seen how the “traditional” approach to planning major infrastructure worked in the UK up to the early 2000s. This chapter switches to the most recent period, looking mainly at change in England, but with shorter studies of the new regime in Scotland and the situations in Wales and Northern Ireland. This will be complemented by a scan of a few large projects of recent importance. The chapter will finish by returning to the question of the role of national imaginaries in thinking about infrastructure systems, and how this may affect planning or strategising at this scale.
