ABSTRACT

This chapter is about judging quality: in action, research and writing. When you write your action research, you hope to say that you have conducted some good quality action research and have produced a good quality report, as part of your good life as a practitioner. The issue therefore becomes, ‘How do you judge “good” in action, in research and in writing? How does this reflect a good life?’ This involves:

identifying criteria and standards for judging quality (a technical level);

coming to some understanding of what ‘quality’ means in relation to the work you do (a practical level);

appreciating how you judge it, and what this may mean for yourself and others (a theoretical level);

explaining how your research reflects what you understand as a good life (an ethical level).
