ABSTRACT

This activity allows pupils to empathise with characters from the past, as featured in a visual source. In essence, the exercise involves pupils ‘acting out’, and then ‘freezing’, a picture, photograph or cartoon with important historical connotations. Those individuals who are not acting out the key ‘visual’ roles also take an active part in the session in the sense that they devise and ask questions to those in roles. Consequently, this activity can be used wherever the teacher wishes to break down a visual source - and study individual characters in detail.
