ABSTRACT
Over the last few years there have been some significant developments to enhance the experience of ECRs such as the introduction of local and national postdoctoral associations. However, in the UK particularly, many changes are taking place both inside and outside of higher education, and in this chapter we will discuss how these changes may impact upon you and future ECRs. We consider the undeniable decrease in opportunities to enter academia necessitates greater emphasis on strategies for developing researcher employability skills to help you and your fellow ECRs to explore alternative job markets. On the positive side, we review the efforts being made by national bodies to make proposals and recommendations to try and enhance the experience and profile of ECRs.
