ABSTRACT
Economic activities interact with the natural environment in two ways. First, resources are withdrawn from the environment to provide food; material inputs for manufacturing and construction; and fuels that provide energy. Second, all economic activities produce some sort of waste products which, unless they are recycled for use in other economic activities, are discharged into the environment, usually with deleterious effect.
