ABSTRACT

Melissa is director for the Multicultural Center at a research university with a troubled history of racism and sexism. She has been working for years to help support students of color. When she first came to campus, she was a strong advocate for students and knew she wanted to be an agent of change. However, quite early she recognized that her strong advocacy was causing her to lose credibility and to be perceived as always complaining. She was frustrated at how people frequently misinterpreted her actions and were taken aback. She was unsure how she could move forward in trying to do the work she knew was important-helping students of color on campus to be successful. Melissa has been asking her colleagues how she can be a more successful change agent.
