ABSTRACT

What would you say, if you were Dave? Teaching content is at the heart of most school activities. We know that the continuing explosion in the amount of information available ensures that much of the knowledge our students will need in the future is not available today-and most of us acknowledge that many students may not remember the details of the Taft -Hartley Act or the importance of equivalent angles for the rest of their lives. Still, teachers spend most of the school day teaching content in four basic areas: language arts, mathematics, social studies, and the sciences. Content can help students understand the world around them, gain an appreciation for cultures, live healthier lives, express themselves more clearly, and make more knowledgeable decisions in many areas of their lives. It also can be a vehicle for learning the types of problem solving and critical and creative thinking that may be considered the basic skills of the 21st century.
