ABSTRACT

One of the most popular programmes on TV worldwide is Who wants to be a millionaire? I am going to assume that you are reasonably familiar with its format, and ask you to imagine that you have found yourself in the hot seat. If everything goes your way, you could wind up $1,000,000 1 richer. But things have not been going as well as you hoped. You have answered the first few questions with some difficulty and have won $4000, but have used up two of your lifelines, ‘ask the audience’ and ‘phone a friend’, in the process. Now you are on the $8000 question, and it is the worst yet: you have absolutely no idea which of the four possible answers is the right one.
