ABSTRACT

If the issues we looked at in Chapter 4 are some of the problems associated with the spread of English around the globe, what strategies are people taking in order to deal with them? In this second section of the book, we examine the interventions that language professionals have devised and carried out in an attempt to engage with the challenges posed by English and its impact on social and cultural practices around the world. ‘Language professionals’ in this context refers to all those whose work in some respects revolves around language, and in this case, specifically the English language. This includes those who teach English and who oversee its use in institutions or society. For all these people, decisions about the language – about its form, its roles, its status – are made in the course of their work, and the results of these decisions comprise the interventions that shape the way English exists in society.
