ABSTRACT

Problem 4. Solve the equation: x + 3 = 7 Subtracting 3 from both sides gives: x + 3 − 3 = 7 − 3 i.e. x = 7 − 3 i.e. x = 4 which is the solution of the equation x + 3 = 7 Note that subtracting 3 from both sides of the above equation results in the ‘+3’moving from the LHS to the RHS, but the sign is changed to ‘−’. So we can move straight from x + 3 = 7 to x = 7 − 3 Thus a term can be moved from one side of an equation to the other as long as a change in sign is made.
