ABSTRACT

Railroads and steamships had drastically reduced travel time and transporting costs. New transportation technologies such as automobiles, buses, tramways, subways, and improved infrastructures strengthened the expansion of industrial globalization. The fascination for mobility was translated into words such as speed and velocity, which became the emblems of modern times. The advent of faster transport by air shipping and the introduction of containers on ocean vessels created a spirit of time saving in the aviation industry and of increasing transfer of cargo attained over sea. As will be shown in this chapter, aviation became the emblem of overall acceleration during the twentieth century.
