CONCLUSIONS AND PROSPECTS book
The theme of this book has been the impact of changing business objectives upon the management of labour. At the outset it was argued that although recent work has recognised the importance of the former on the latter, there remain gaps in our understanding of how this relationship operated in practice. These relate to difficulties in analysing the nature of strategic decision-making as well as an inadequate understanding of the central business strategies in a dynamic context. For these reasons the book has adopted an approach which traced the links between the commercial decision-making context facing the banks and their employee relations policies over a time period of some 20 years. It was noted that although decisions concerning labour are contingent upon, and downstream from, the central mission of the company — the achievement of a satisfactory return on the assets through decisions about market position and growth — none the less the management of labour also represents an input into these key areas of policy as a constraint and as an opportunity.
