ABSTRACT
It is opportune in this final section to provide an overview of the whole 160-year period by reiterating the more important, broad historical developments highlighted by the study. Once again it seems sensible to look, in turn, at each of the three functional divisions used throughout: at the commercial banking sector; at monetary policy; and at the UK's international financial position.
