ABSTRACT
This and the following chapter concentrate on the commercial banks. Chapter 4 details the type of business undertaken by the banks, but the present purpose is to examine institutional developments. These are viewed as the joint–product of the legal and economic environment in which the banks found themselves operating, the interactions involved forming the substance of the chapter.
