ABSTRACT

Are you doing drama

enthusiastically?

as a bit of energetic relief from more studious work?

with reluctance because one of your English lessons is allocated to it?

Think about how this might affect your opening approach. I used to say: “We’re going to do a bit of drama today; we’re going to work in groups …” and it was chaos. I thought it was a way of indicating that this was a different area of work with new excitement; I see now it was a signal for disorder and confusion rather than a clear instruction. What is this thing “drama” if you can just do a “bit” of it? Can you try it and then opt out if you don’t get on? Why isn’t it part of the real curriculum? Why is it used as a reward for real work? Isn’t it independently valid or worthwhile?
