ABSTRACT

Strategic planning is an essential part of the overall strategic management process. It is closely related to strategic thinking, analysis and reflection. The end result is the elaboration of a strategic document, programme, plan, concept or framework which serves as the 'organisation's Bible' and is a key for all management actions. The organizational and managerial viewpoint on strategic planning originated in the 1950s and was especially widespread from the 1960s to the mid-1970s. General Electric Company was a pioneer in using corporate strategic planning techniques. Using strategic planning methods in the arts is a relatively new phenomenon, and publications on this subject matter are scarce. Strategic planning covers all aspects of an organisation's activities and includes all levels of management, functions and departments. Different types of strategic documents are used in the arts sector, for example a strategic plan, strategic framework, strategic concept or strategic programme.
