ABSTRACT

The varied concepts of ‘a university’ and their distinguishing features having been considered, this chapter discusses the challenges that these and other universities in Pakistan face. Some of the challenges resonate with those faced in other Muslim contexts discussed in Chapter 3, while several others are specific to higher education in Pakistan. This chapter relies on an analysis of the data from interviews with the scholars from Pakistani higher education institutions, which is complemented by a wider documentary analysis, especially of documents from the HEC, and observation.
